2011 was a year of advances and some setbacks for the Association and some of its committees. The Save the Monkey Committee saw some major gains with monkey bridge and “Monkey Crossing” signage installations. And the monkeys appear to be doing better than they were in 2010 with less reports of electrocutions. Score one for the monos!
Our Ecological Blue Flag Committee continues to score successes with this year’s annual beach cleanup having been one of the most successful ever. And the intensive, daily cleanups of trash on the beach have succeeded in allowing us to maintain our prestigious Ecological Blue Flag status. Way to go!
Our streets fared better this winter than last, in general. But the Streets Committee continues to put pressure on the Municipalidad de Carrillo to make sure that the roads at the first and second beach entrances get repaired – especially in light of the Muni’s real estate tax increase. If Playa Hermosa residents will be required to pay more, then they should receive municipal services proportionately. There is a lot of work involved in keeping up the pressure without angering the powers that be at the Muni.
Unfortunately, the Condofish Artificial Reef Project took a blow in late October when bad weather wreaked havoc on the fledgling cinderblock igloos and pyramids. A recent dive inspection revealed widespread damage that will require repair. There were also some lessons learned that will be applied to future reef construction.

2011 fue un año de avances y algunos retrocesos de la Asociacion y algunos de sus comites. El Comite de Salve los Monos de Playa Hermosa vio algunos avances importantes con puentes de monos y las instalaciones de rotulos de “Monkey Crossing”. Y los monos parecen mejor que eran en 2010 con menos informes de electrocuciones. Gana uno punto para los monos!
Nuestro Comite de Bandera Azul Ecologica continua a ganar con la limpieza de la playa anual que haber sido uno de los mas exitosos de la historia. Y la limpieza intensiva diaria de basura en la playa han tenido exito en lo que nos permite mantener nuestro prestigio estado de Bandera Azul Ecologica. Bien hecho!
Nuestras calles son mejores en este invierno que el año pasado, en general. Sin embargo, el Comite de las Calles sigue ejerciendo presion sobre la Municipalidad de Carrillo para asegurarse que las calles en las entradas primera y segunda ser reparado – especialmente porque la Muni aumento los impuestos de nuestros bienes raices. Si los residentes de Playa Hermosa estaran obligados a pagar mas, ellos deben dar los servicios municipales de manera proporcional. Hay una gran cantidad de trabajo necesario para mantener la presion sin enojar a los poderes “facticos” en la Muni.
Lamentablemente, el proyecto de arrecife artificial Condofish recibio un duro golpe al fin de octubre cuando el mal tiempo causo estragos en los iglues y las piramides de bloques. Una inspeccion de buceo reciente revelo daños generalizados que necesitan una correccion. Hubo tambien algunas lecciones aprendidas que se aplicaran a la construccion de arrecifes en el futuro.
